Husky sledding: Tromsø or Lapland, and drive or ride along?

A husky ride can mean two kilometres in a sleigh or an hour driving your own team. Here is how the tours differ in Tromsø and Finnish Lapland, and what to look for.

Short answer

  • In Tromsø: few husky tours, mostly self-drive, around €210–390 and about half a day.
  • In Lapland: many more, typically about €195; distances range from 2 km to 10 km and more.
  • The question to ask: how many kilometres, and do you drive the sled yourself?

Husky tours look alike in photos and are very different in practice. The two things that set the price are how far you go and whether you drive the sled or sit in it.

Ride along or drive

  • Passenger rides: a guide or another guest drives; you sit in the sled. Often short, sometimes a couple of kilometres, and common in combination tours with reindeer or Santa Claus Village.
  • Self-drive: you stand on the runners and drive your own team, usually in pairs, swapping between driver and passenger. You get a briefing first, and a guide leads on the trail.

Driving is easier than it looks: the dogs know the trail, and your job is mostly to brake. Expect to be tired and very happy.

Tromsø

We list only seven husky tours around Tromsø, at about €316 in the middle of the range, roughly €210–390. The kennels are outside the city, so most tours take half a day including the drive. The best-reviewed one by far is a self-drive tour: pairs share a sled and a team of five or six Alaskan huskies for about 70–80 minutes on the trail, with a hot drink afterwards. The minimum age there is seven.

Finnish Lapland

Lapland has many more husky tours (47 in our list) and they cost less, about €195 in the middle of the range. The range in what you get is wide:

KindTypical distanceWhat it is
Combo with reindeerAbout 2 km by huskyA short taste of both; good with small children
Standard safari5–6 kmPassenger or shared driving
Self-drive safari10 km or moreYour own sled, often at a small family kennel

Small family kennels tend to score well with travellers: smaller groups, more time with the dogs, and a ride through quiet forest rather than a busy loop. Some also run tours in autumn, before the snow, using wheeled carts.

How to choose

  1. Check the distance or the time on the sled, not the length of the tour.
  2. Decide whether you want to drive. If you do, the listing should say “self-drive” or “drive your own team”.
  3. Check the minimum age for children, and whether they can ride in the sled.
  4. Dress for standing still. Driving keeps you warm; sitting in the sled does not. See what to wear.
