Northern lights in Rovaniemi: what the “100% guarantee” really covers

About one in five aurora tours in Finnish Lapland promises your money back if there are no lights. Here is what that guarantee actually says, and how to pick between them.

Short answer

  • The guarantee: a refund if the guide’s camera captures no aurora during the tour.
  • Typical price: around €130 for a shared tour; the cheapest coach options start under €80.
  • Length: usually 3–5 hours, though small groups with unlimited mileage can run much longer.
  • Best value: a small group (8 or fewer) that will drive into Sweden or Norway when Finland is cloudy.

Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle, inland in Finnish Lapland. It is colder and drier than the Norwegian coast, the airport is ten minutes from town, and it has more aurora tours than anywhere else we list: 174 in Finnish Lapland, most of them from Rovaniemi.

A shared tour costs about €130 at the middle of the range, half of them between €104 and €165. That is noticeably less than in Tromsø, partly because tours here are shorter: three to five hours is normal.

What “100% guarantee” means

We count 38 aurora tours in Finnish Lapland that advertise a guarantee or a refund. We read the terms of the most-booked ones, and they say the same thing in different words: if the guide or photographer cannot capture the northern lights on camera during your tour, you get your tour price back.

Two things follow from that wording:

  • “On camera” is a low bar. A camera on a tripod picks up a faint aurora that may look like a pale grey cloud to your eye. On a weak night you can get your photo, no refund, and no green sky overhead.
  • It is a refund, not a second tour. If your time in Lapland is short, the money back does not replace the night you lost.

That does not make the guarantee meaningless. It gives the operator a reason to keep driving until it finds a gap in the cloud, and the best of them do.

Coach or small group

Several operators sell the same tour two ways, and the difference matters more than the guarantee:

Coach optionSmall-group option
Group sizeLarge busUsually 8 or fewer
PickupOften from a meeting point in townOften from your accommodation
Thermal overallsNot always includedUsually included
RouteFixed areaFollows the clear sky, sometimes across the border
PriceFrom under €80Usually €130–190

Read which option you are booking. A few listings put the coach and the small group on the same page, and the overalls, pickup and route only come with the small group.

Crossing the border

Rovaniemi is a few hours’ drive from both Sweden and Norway. The small-group tours with no mileage limit will cross either border if the forecast is better there, which is the single biggest thing that improves your odds. If a listing says “unlimited mileage” or “no fixed route”, that is what it means.

How to choose

  1. Pick the group size first. A small van changes direction faster than a bus.
  2. Check for overalls and boots if you are not bringing serious winter clothing. Rovaniemi in January averages about −8 to −10 °C, and a still night by a lake is colder.
  3. Book your first night so a cloudy evening leaves room for another try.
  4. Read the guarantee line on the listing itself before you pay.

A guarantee tells you the operator will try. The group size and the mileage tell you how hard.
